Until the turn of the century, Shoreditch had no restaurant scene to speak of beyond the chip shops and kebab joints lining the route from Old Street tube to Hoxton Square. These catered for drinkers on their way home from the bar scene that had begun to develop around what became known as the Shoreditch Triangle, the area bounded by Old Street, Great Eastern Street and Shoreditch High Street.
Even 10 years later, the idea that Shoreditch – by now home to some of the best bars in London - could support a high-end restaurant scene would have seemed far-fetched.
All that changed, however, when The Clove Club opened in 2013 in what had formerly been Shoreditch Town Hall. Owned by a chef and front-of-house trio who had been part of the Young Turks – a collective of twentysomething hospitality professionals on a mission to shake up the restaurant industry – it brought the sort of high-end dining served in casual surrounds that Noma was pioneering in Copenhagen.
Since then, members’ club Soho House set up shop opposite the shiny new Overground station at Shoreditch High Street, but it was the 2017 arrival of global luxury mega brand Nobu which really cemented Shoreditch’s reputation as a destination that was as welcoming to corporates as creatives – and you’ll find three private dining rooms there.
