The Trafalgar Tavern

I have today taken some visitors to London for a bar meal at the Trafalgar Tavern on their first visit to Greenwich to see the Cutty Sark, and wanting to try the renowned Greenwich Whitebait.. In past this has been the ideal choice: I have not been for a year or so but knowing of the popularity of the venue I assumed it had not changed. How wrong I was, the location is excellent but the food is DIRE. I have never been so embarrassed in my choice of eatery than I was today. The presentation of the food was very poor for a start: the Welsh Rarebit was one and a half overcooked slices of a bloomer loaf on a plate with no garnish whatsoever with a mixture whose only flavour was the mustard. The Greenwich Whitebait was a large ramekin of whitebait in thick batter and overcooked in tainted oil with a pot of pink mayonnaise, again with no garnish; the Ploughmans comprised three small triangles of tasteless cheddar, a quarter of an apple, a couple of small pickled onions and a small amount of endive accompanied by two slices of white sliced bloomer bread. NONE OF THIS FOOD TASTED THE LEAST BIT PLEASANT AND IT WAS NOT CHEAP and not what you expect from a venue calling itself a Gastropub. I don't know what has happened to the Trafalgar Tavern in the past year but the Management needs to buck up its ideas: offering food of the standard it is currently it does not deserve to survive. My guests are off to eat at the Gavroche tonight by comparison. Like your previous reviewer we shall not be eating at the Trafalgar again. Such a shame!

Steak was over cooked and thin as a pancake. Child's meal was full of mustard and Rocky Road ice cream was a poor excuse for vanilla ice cream with a biscuit on the side. Service was very slow. Overall an increadibly disappointing experience. We came back after a wonderful meal last year, but clearly the food and service standards have dropped and prices have increased. We will not be back!!
