Rake’s is a new concept at Andaz, the five-star Hyatt hotel where once stood the infamous Bethlehem Hospital (aka ‘Bedlam’). While we’re not keen on the tacky plastic ivy-covered gazebo amid the grandeur of The Front Room, Rake’s racy red Victorian-style Parlour is certainly worth a visit for its contemporary cocktails. Raffish recipes such as Mad House (a fennel, orange and red-pepper vodka and Kümmel Sour) and a dried-down alt’ Pimm’s (made with strawberry-laden vermouth and Fernet Branca) are interesting and instantly Instagrammable. Otherwise, in the absence of Prosecco – is this bravely bucking a trend or plain bonkers? – order a crisp cava, one of a dozen wines, hoochy Highballs, juices or smoothies. All-day bar snacks provide nourishment; we liked the sesame and cashew cauliflower ‘wings’ and the chicken and chorizo croquettes. Larger plates might include pan-fried sea trout with potato, fennel and caper salad, followed by ices, sorbets and cheesecakes.

I was looking for a quiet venue to meet an out-of-town client to hold a confidential meeting over dinner, amidst the noisy tumult of so many Liverpool St haunts. I stumbled upon Rake's by chance. I was met by front-of-house host, Kennya. She was warm and welcoming as one might expect but she became genuinely helpful and attentive as the evening wore on. I felt the front bar was too noisty and she took me to the rear, quiter resataurant area. However, here the tables were too close to hold a private discussion. She immediately suggested their small, private dining area, just off the main resatauarnt, which proved to be ideal. (There was no additional charge for its use.)
My client arrived and we were able to have the confidential meeting we planned, alongside a superb meal. (I had the sea bass paella - highly recommended.) The service could not have been more attentive with Sacha and Ida always at hand. taking orders and making suggestions. Kennya came back at vatrious points to ensure our meeting and meal was going to plan.
Our evening could not have been bettered. Thank you Kennya and staff.
