Fleet Street initially became known as a hub for the printing and publishing trades in the early 16th century, with the street’s affection for journalism being pioneered by Wynkyn de Worde, who produced nearly 800 books from his offices on Shoe Lane. It was from this point that the publishing industry continued to flourish in the area, and by the 20th century, most of Britain’s national newspapers operated on Fleet Street, with big titles such as The Daily Telegraph, The Times and The Evening Standard all taking up residence here.

These days, most newspapers, magazines and publishing houses have moved away from Fleet Street, but it remains a by-word for the national press, and the street is still well regarded, now being home to a mixture of offices, retail space and dining destinations.
