New-school catering in the gym during the sixth-form disco is the shtick of this fun-loving restaurant/bar/events space on food-forward Bermondsey Street. There are capacious booths designed like pommel horses and rope curtains dividing the venue, plus loud music, enthusiastic young staff and gangs of post-work revellers partying after the home-time bell. The food spells comfort, with a few cheffy squiggles applied to sound ingredients: meat and fish boards are great for sharing, otherwise plump for devilled mushrooms followed by grilled gammon chop with a fried duck egg and pineapple or pan-seared sea bream with grilled fennel, peas and broad beans – although one fan “always opts for the yummy burger”. Bacon and black pudding Scotch eggs are a popular bar nibble, while the intriguing wine list is bolstered by house cocktails referencing local history. Don’t forget to book ahead for the two-hour ‘bottomless brunch.
