SquareMeal Review of German Gymnasium

Bronze Award

Built in 1864 for the German Gymnastics Society, D&D London’s immaculate restoration of the German Gymnasium is a return to the mega-brasserie style of their 90s heyday, with brasserie-style food served on the ground floor (lunch, weekend brunch etc.) and a more refined menu available in the main restaurant. The vast ‘grand café’ space is a real spectacle with theatrical staircases linking the sprawling, marble-floored dining room to secluded tables tucked behind gleaming white architrave pillars upstairs. By contrast, the Mittel-European menu is more homely than awe-inspiring, although its stellar renditions of think-cut veal schnitzel, beef broth with calf’s liver dumplings, stroganoff with spätzle or crisp, gooey apple strudel are certainly no less memorable. Meat fiends will warm to Black Forest hams and ample wursts (including a curry version), while a ‘butcher’s plate’ loaded with steak, ox tongue, sausages and sauerkraut outshines the pedestrian rib-eye with crispy onions. Ambitious pricing is offset by lunchtime specials, and the German-led wine list is heaven for fans of Riesling and Spätburgunder. “Exceptionally friendly” suited staff match the stylish setting.

Pig-out

Germany has contributed many things to the modern world, but culinary impact is not one of them. While London has its own dedicated Austrian and Swiss restaurants, there is a certain irony attached to locating the city’s first dedicated German offering on the site of a former gym. Fine dining this ain’t. However, if it’s hearty comfort food you’re after, then the Gymnasium is the place to go. Even without the food, the building is a marvel for any fan of London’s history. Credit to Conran & Partners as well as the D&D Group for transforming the site of England’s first purpose-built gymnasium where some of the indoor events of the 1866 Olympics took place, into a large dining space. Visitors can marvel at the lovingly restored vaulted ceiling, the balcony (where a more restaurant-like experience can be had) and the central atrium, modelled on the grand café of yesteryear. Despite the large space where the owners have seemingly sought cram in as many tables as possible, both my dining comrade and I were impressed by the fact that we could make ourselves heard, even on a busy midweek lunchtime. Service was generally efficient even if a little brisk (dare one say, slightly Germanic?), although the front-of-house arrangements were disappointing. The entrance to the Gymnasium is cramped and does not allow for the efficient passing of traffic. Meanwhile, the welcome definitely bordered on the brusque rather than the effusive. Onto the food, and we are firmly in the territory of carbs combined with pig-based products. Sure, there are other options, but arguably Germany’s best-known culinary export – the wurst, or humble sausage – occupies a prominent role on the menu in multifarious formats. Both my comrade and I leant more towards Austrian specialities, favouring schnitzels (breaded veal escalopes) for our mains followed by a piece of Sachertorte (rich chocolate cake) to share for dessert. Portion sizing was generous and full marks for execution. The dishes – and our starters too – all delivered, even if they did not wow. Maybe this isn’t the point, it’s all about pigging out on comfort dishes; a formula that works particularly well at this time of the year. Pricing is fair, but we are by no means in bargain territory; a Schnitzel at over £25 could fund a two-course set lunch menu at many other more dynamic London venues. Come for the experience, but don’t forget to book your real-world gym session straight after.

Love the area it is located. Convenient to get there plus the interior makes you feel like in another century! They have Swiss selection of good too. So definitely recommended if looking for great sausages "Wurst".

Fantastic cocktails and food
The venue is beautiful and very spacious, I'd been waiting for ages to go to this place and it did not disappoint. The staff were extremely friendly and very attentive. We ordered from the set menu which was great value for money. After our dinner, they found us 2 chairs at the bar where we continued our evening. The cocktails were delicious, all the barmen were Italian and took great pride in their drinks. We did not want the night to end. Will 100% go back.

Lunch at The Gym
What a great architectural restoration; pity about the food though! We had a great waitress who was engaged and advised on the menu which was very limited in choice until she mentioned a whole other "online" menu. Bit odd to be running an alternative menu in the hidden background (?). Still having ordered "bockwurst" in a German restaurant I ended up with a very bland tasteless bangers and mash! The pumpkin soup starter however was delicious. 2 course a la carte carte with coffee and service was £90+. Very expensive for lunch. Atmosphere was great but value for money? Absolutely not!! Wouldn't go again. I'll stick with Zedel as my lunchtime favourite.

WHY WORK OUT WHEN YOU CAN GO THE GYM?
What was not to like about this venue in terms of aesthetics, atmosphere and general bonhomie. From the buzzy café-style eatery downstairs to the restaurant on the upper floor, you are greeted with wonderful architectural features. The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive. Drinks beforehand in the bar upstairs arrived promptly and changes to our orders were met with a totally 'can do' attitude. A party of four, we ate from the £30 set menu and were delighted by the quality of the food. Again the service was good and we came away feeling very satisfied by our experience. The best bit, well not quite but close, was the fact that no matter where we were in the venue, we were easily able to hear each other speak, a rarity in a kit of restaurants where the noise level is deafening. I'd go again just for that. Restaurateurs - please note. The bill at the end £60/head but we did have a cocktail, wine and coffee with our meal and with service added - well it all adds up. I'm not complaining.
