SquareMeal Review of Fiume

Silver Award

Francesco Mazzei, known for Sartoria on Savile Row and Islington’s Radici, brings his signature Italian style south of the river to Battersea Power Station. Part of the D&D stable, Fiume means ‘river’ and the site boasts a large alfresco terrace next to the Thames, decked out with olives trees and potted herbs. Inside, the open-plan dining room is stylish and buzzy; the kind of space that’s equally good for groups or dinner per due. The menu draws on southern Italy and is split into antipasti, primi and secondi, plus cicchetti snacks such as punchy crostini topped with anchovies and mozzarella. Stand-outs on our visit included tagliolini laced with generous amounts of fresh crab and Amalfi lemon, perfectly al dente pasta boosted with a judicious kick of chilli spice; and decadent burrata tortelli with sage and truffle, crunchy hazelnuts adding texture to the creamy parcels. Elsewhere the menu includes lamb scottadito – juicy chops served with smoky aubergine – and homestyle ‘Roman’ chicken in tomato and olive sauce. Mazzei staples such as crisp zucchini fritti and tiramisu are also worth a punt; while a weekend brunch menu, the all-Italian wine list and great selection of aperitivos are further pluses.

The setting is of course stunning, by the river in Battersea, and the outdoor area is much sought after. But I prefer to go inside, where one can see the chefs at work under the direction of Francesco Mazzei who shouts orders left right and centre (in an unusual calm manner, for a southern Italian!) Food is fresh, regional and very very tasty. Portions are not huge (but it depends on the dishes I suppose) and although I am not a great pasta eater, this is where I would want to try some of the pasta on offer. Fish is cooked divinely. Service is good, it's pricey, but so must be the rent...

So wanted to like this restaurant
We love Sartoria. We adored L’Anima . We wanted to love this place too but we didn’t. The service was very friendly but so slow that the meal became a marathon of rather mediocre dishes. We ordered Zuccini Fritti with our drinks- they came after our first course. We could have forgiven that had they been up to the standards of Sartoria . They weren’t - more like the Ivy Cafe Wimbledon. All pastry no corgette- very disappointing. Our starters of gnocchi, meatballs and tortellini were ok but on par with Strada . The main course of spaghetti with lobster ( I think had in total the lobster meat of one claw ) and Sea Bass in tomato sauce ( looked like a ready meal) were fairly bland. Dessert was frankly inedible. I love and order Zabaone often so my partner and I decided to split one. He had the first bite and said it tastes funny. I then tried and realised the egg yolks were still raw. When I mentioned this to the waiter he took it to the chef who tasted it and told me I was wrong. We didn’t eat it and to be fair they took it off the bill and gave us Lemonceollos as an apology. But the fact of the matter is we paid £230 for 3 for very mediocre food. I would rather pay £40 more a head and eat at Sartoria or £50 a head less and eat at our local Italian. I can’t understand the glowing reviews on the website maybe we hit it on an off night
