Formerly Smokehouse Chiswick, this London gastropub now goes by The Queen's Head. However, it seems the name is the only thing that's really changed with the decor, chef and menu remaining largely the same. Punchy, powerfully flavoured smoked meats are the forte here, and just about everything is laced with serious amounts of throat-tingling chilli “that would make an Aztec wince”. Starters of beef-shin tacos with chipotle aïoli and green sauce or charred mackerel escabèche with kohlrabi and apple rémoulade provide the warm-up for headline acts such as rare-breed burgers with Korean pulled pork and fries, pork belly with spiced fish broth, smoked pineapple and rainbow chard or various smoked meat platters (depending on the butcher’s cuts). For pud, you mind find smoked strawberries (in mash-up with matcha blancmange and crystallised hazelnuts) or you can play it (relatively) safe with doughnuts, marshmallow and spiced chocolate. The extensive garden is ideal for lingering over Saturday brunch, and there are ‘feasting’ deals for big groups – all washed down with esoteric beers, trendy cocktails and fizz.
