SquareMeal Review of The Glasshouse Kew

Silver Award

Light and airy, but with a simple elegance that comes from clever, careful design, this sibling of La Trompette and Chez Bruce is the go-to destination for Kew’s smart set. It also gives its siblings a run for their money when it comes to quality, presentation and service, though it’s easier to get a table here. The menu is a showcase for seasonal British ingredients cooked with proper knowhow and an eye to the future rather than the past. The menu changes often, but you might find rich indulgence in the shape of roast duck breast with foie gras parfait and baby beets or Welsh lamb with crispy sweetbreads alongside contemporary dishes with a lighter touch: salmon and sea bream carpaccio dressed with lime and chilli or a heavenly mix of plaice, chorizo and squid, with an umami hit from anchovy dressing.  Service is “terrific” and the wine cellar is “serious, though not necessarily pricey”.

Imaginative and well presented food in a corner of SW London
We are fans of the sister restaurant Chez Bruce and had to be in Kew one evening so thought we would try The Glasshouse. Food is similar to Chez Bruce : varied , well presented, original . Pleasant service and modern surroundings. On balance we prefer Chez Bruce as wine list is huge and varied , atmosphere is more comfortable and clientele slightly younger and less stuffy. Overall a good experience though. Need to try the 3rd restaurant in the Bruce Poole stable.

Clearly desrerves its star
Our first visit today at lunch. I don't know why it's taken us so long to eat here- certainly nothing we've heard or read has created any prejudice, and we very much enjoy its sister restaurant La Trompette a time or two each year. Still, better late than never and we did both enjoy our three course lunch and bottle of Negroamaro today. Nothing we ate was less that good, uniformly presented and cooked nicely, and served by by an enthusiastic front -of-house team. We started with Jerusalem artichoke soup and a wild mushroom raviolo that, whilst pleasant, could have been better with a slightly more intense flavour of its own and a less pungency in the veg accompanying it. Main courses were Daube of beef and pot-roast pheasant, with the beef probably taking the prize. Desserts were both excellent, each of us thinking that our poached rhubarb with puree and crumble; and chocolate and orange mousse with a burnt orange ice cream was just what we wanted. Decent coffee, good bread, and timely service throughout. Altogether a good lunch. The question that consumed us during and after the meal was "Is this as good as La Trompette?" - its sibling, a couple of miles or so away in Chiswick. We both thought the Glasshouse to be just fine in absolute terms, but that La Trompette has the better, more flavoursome, food. Not by a lot, but by enough to say that we prefer it . And given that the restaurants are about as far away as each other for us, it's likely that La Trompette will see rather more of us in future. Sorry, and I can only repeat that The Glasshouse gave us a very nice lunch.
