SquareMeal Review of The Printing Press Bar & Kitchen

Bronze Award

Occupying the former home of Scottish novelist Susan Ferrier, this newly opened bar and kitchen from restaurateur Des McDonald provides refined all-day dining in a Georgian townhouse. The menus from head chef Colin Fleming are focused on seasonal Scottish produce, from Eyemouth langoustines to Shetland black potatoes and Tweed Valley Scotch beef cooked on the Josper grill. We enjoyed starters of creamy Jersey Royal velouté with crab gratin toasts, and a mustardy smoked haddock rarebit with curried cauliflower and golden raisins. Mains range from classic hearty fare to more refined dishes: mince and tatties, slow-cooked in red wine, came with a jug of rich bone-marrow gravy and a side of buttery bashed neeps; delicate roast hake was accompanied by Jerusalem artichoke purée and crisps, salty bacon and red wine sauce. Friendly service adds to the relaxed vibe of this vast dining room decorated with vintage typewriters and classic Scottish novels.
