If ever a food business were created with oodles of love, it must be the glorious The Moon & Pea bistro and its Aladdin’s cave of a deli just across Lark Lane. The place is always busy, with customers clustered around the assortment of random wooden tables, admiring the retro wallpaper and collection of quirky vintage objects. Students and academics drop in for brunch of eggs Benedict with Black Forest ham on a crisp poppy-knot roll, or the ‘Moon breakfast’ (a massive full English), which will fill up even ravenous undergraduates for much of the day. A steady stream of parents with toddlers flows through the venue until lunch and dinner, where blackened cajun chicken burger comes with hearty chips, and free-range chicken breast is served with a portobello mushroom and Stilton, dauphinois potatoes and a truffle sauce. There’s more than a touch of nursery comfort at this deservedly popular bolt-hole.
