Found amid the expansive grounds of Hampshire’s five-star Chewton Glen hotel, this light and airy restaurant and cookery school offers an informal alternative to The Dining Room restaurant. Partially overseen by TV chef James Martin, he’s here once a month to teach a cookery class and also has input on the menu, in collaboration with head chef Adam Hart. The focus on local sourcing is obvious, with The Kitchen’s adjacent garden providing fruits, vegetables and herbs to dress a menu of comfort food classics. A starting snack of orecchiette with wild mushrooms and truffles is deliciously creamy, while a main dish of fennel, rosemary sausage and black olive sourdough pizza is given a welcome kick thanks to morsels of ‘nduja. There are also create-your-own charcuterie boards and fresh salads, while classic desserts include warm cinnamon doughnuts with a milky dipping sauce. An international, 42-bin wine list impresses (all options are available by the glass or carafe), while the extensive cocktail list includes a Pink G&T, mixing gin, bitters and elderflower tonic. Extremely capable staff and a truly stunning setting ensure that this is one kitchen which could never have too many cooks.
