SquareMeal Review of The Ivy Soho Brasserie

Bronze Award

The Ivy Collection has spread once again, with this large Soho site which is most closely related to The Ivy Kensington Brasserie. Unlike that site, Soho is a far clubbier proposition, perfect for this part of town and packed with flashy artworks and even flashier customers. It’s a testament to the formula that it feels different here, yet still unmistakeably The Ivy. That’s down to the menu which, just like every other outpost, offers the same please-all, international menu of prawn cocktails, chicken liver parfaits, steaks, grilled lobsters and that trademark shepherd’s pie. We can’t fault the food here, from a warm duck and watermelon salad crunching with toasted cashews, to jet-black, Dukkah-spiced aubergine atop sumptuous labneh. Prices are surprisingly accessible too (another Ivy trademark), while the cocktail list has been given particular attention, majoring in fizzing and fruity vodka-and-gin based mixes. With so much space, the restaurant is divided up into more and less informal sections and cubbies, while a large terrace is going to make this a hot summer ticket. Yes, it’s predictable stuff and yes, its gleaming demeanour won’t please Soho traditionalists, but it’s already popular and injecting a party buzz into this newly overhauled W1 street.

About

Set right in the heart on Soho on Broadwick Street, The Ivy Soho Brasserie brings together everything we’ve come to love about Ivy restaurants – elegant interiors, smartly-dressed waiters and crowd-pleasing food – with a cool Soho edge. This means that The Ivy Soho Brasserie is a perfect place to go for a variety of different occasions whether that be a large celebratory dinner or just an informal breakfast. One thing’s for sure and that is that you’ll be guaranteed to be well looked after at The Ivy Soho Brasserie.

From the outside, The Ivy Soho Brasserie looks like most Ivy restaurants with a green canopy covering a small seating area out front. Once you head in however, you’re greeted by colourful pieces of modern art which jump out of the walls; brightly coloured chairs sit around the many tables, and there is a signature glistening bar up one end with enough space for people to eat at the counter.

The huge food offering ranges from a breakfast menu which includes classics such as eggs benedict, to a separate menu for vegans and vegetarians. However, the main all-day menu is what most people come to Ivy restaurants for and The Ivy Soho Brasserie’s menu doesn’t disappoint. With starters ranging from truffled wild mushrooms, all the way through to a lobster risotto, it won’t be difficult to find a first course that appeals. Main courses include their signature shepherd’s pie, as well as a traditional fish and chips, and plenty more. If you have any space left, pudding options vary from crème brûlée to rum baba.

When it comes to drinks, there are a number of different choices available. As well as an extensive wine list, you can also try one of the many different cocktails on offer, or perhaps a bottle of The Ivy’s very own craft lager.

Relevant reinvention

Visit the homepage of the Ivy and the word that stands out most strongly is ‘modern’, which prefixes the perhaps less glamorous ‘British restaurant’ descriptor. Sceptics might suggest a case of trying too hard, whereas a more generous interpretation would highlight that the success of this stalwart restaurant brand lies in its ongoing relevance. Similar to Bentley’s (visited and most recently reviewed in October), the original West Street outpost of the Ivy has endured for over 100 years. Any restaurant reaching the century mark deserves plaudits for longevity if nothing else. However, its owners showed a remarkable level of commercial acumen not only in choosing to modernise the primary venue but also to roll out the brand into a chain of upscale brasseries modelled on the original concept. A large group of us recently descended on the Soho branch of the ever-expanding empire and came away impressed by the execution if not outright wowed. The design emphasises both British luxury and heritage; take a nod to art nouveau, mix with leather banquettes and add some club music and you get the Ivy Brasserie. The food formula is much as it as ever been with the Ivy – conventional classics embracing the likes of, say, prawn cocktail or steak with chips. It was hard to mess up the smoked salmon with which I began (and I liked its pairing with dark rye bread). For mains, my blackened cod fillet was a bold choice on the part of the venue and mostly came off. The accompanying broccoli was prepared well, but the chilli and yuzu mayonnaise jarred rather than enhanced. To finish, however beautiful the chocolate mousse looked, it was stomach-churningly too rich and I could only manage a few mouthfuls. Others in the group witnessed similar hits and misses across their selections. Wine was decent and we particularly rated a white Chardonnay from Macon that punched above its weight. Pricing can be considered reasonable, with starters coming in around the £10-15 mark and mains at £20ish. Overall, a solid Soho option and certainly a safe bet for large groups.

Absolutely brilliant service! Charming and friendly waiting team. The online booking confirmation stated 2.5hrs for our group, but 5hrs later we were still there (and being encouraged to continue if we wanted to). A very relaxing afternoon with truly scrumptious food. The chocolate bomb dessert derseves a special mention, as does the house Champagne which was delicious.

I took my Father, my mum and my partner to the Ivy on Saturday and we all absolutely loved it. The food was amazing as usual. It was a little noisier than our previous visit but it was a Saturday so that's to be expected. Overall a brilliant time!

A welcome addition to The Ivy family. Excellent service at this branch (far outdoes the City branch) and runs a close second to the Covent Garden location.
