One of a clutch of unspoiled Victorian pubs in Leeds, the Grade II-listed Garden Gate is a total treasure. Buried among some drab Hunslet housing, its glazed tiles, etched glass, ornate plasterwork
and mahogany fittings are remarkable. Down the years it has risked both closure and demolition, only to be saved by locals and pub lovers who knew it was worth preserving. Following a number of
owners including Tetley’s and Punch Taverns, it was bought by the up-and-coming Leeds Brewery in 2010 – so its future is now, hopefully, secure. Leeds Pale, Best and Midnight Bell are on tap for
the beer brigade, while food runs from gammon, egg and chips or steak and mushroom pie to ample Yorkshire puddings filled with beef or sausage. Thursday night is curry night.
