SquareMeal Review of The Fourth Floor Brasserie

Bronze Award

The brasserie situated within the Leeds branch of Harvey Nichols strikes a casual, contemporary pose with its long bar, spectacular rooftop vistas and open kitchen. The interiors comprise a glamorous mix of burnished gold mirrors, statement lighting and teal-toned leather seats that are tailor-made for shoppers and the city’s smart set. A wall of windows provides plenty of natural light and allows diners to gaze out on a striking city-rooftop vista as they tuck into breakfast, lunch or dinner.

On-trend flavours and seasonal ingredients are the keynotes of the concise menu at The Fourth Floor Brasserie, whatever time of day you visit. Breakfast could be anything from pastries and bread-based items (toast, crumpets or an English muffin) to something heartier like a full English or vanilla buttermilk pancakes served with your choice of maple syrup, yoghurt, blueberry compote, berries, vanilla ice cream or streaky bacon.

Later on, perhaps after a day’s hard shopping, you might drop in for a plate of charred mackerel with potato, confit shallot, dill powder and smoked paprika aioli or venison carpaccio with aubergine caviar ahead of pan-fried halibut with kale, fennel and potato crumble, capers and parsley beurre noisette. Depending on the season, you might finish with honeycomb mousse topped with caramelised pecans, crispy filo pastry and passion fruit or a steamed cinnamon pudding with apple, vanilla crème anglaise.

Set menus offer decent value, particularly the vegan set menu (£18/20 for two/three courses) which features dishes such as butternut squash tofu mousse topped with pumpkin seed granola and pickled beetroot; roasted cauliflower with curried hummus, hazelnut dukkah, kale and hazelnut dressing; and coconut ice cream crowned with passion fruit and toasted coconut. There’s also a whole range of snacks on offer should you feel peckish when dropping in for a coffee or a glass of wine from the global wine list.
