Beer gardens don’t come more epic than the sprawling acres outside the Anchor Inn – a terrific traditional boozer nestled at the foot of Golden Cap (the highest point on the South West Coast Path). After a bracing walk on the beach, grab one of the clifftop seats or stake your claim on the terrace with a pint of locally brewed Palmer’s ale – perfect for a spot of wave-watching. Alternatively – if the weather’s unkind – retreat to the traditional comforts of the two old-fashioned bars. If you fancy something to go with your Cask Marque beer or gluggable wine, order from a menu that offers eclectic grub based on locally sourced produce – anything from pies, bangers and battered fish to tempura vegetables or lemon-marinated chicken on roasted pepper and feta risotto. All are done to a first-class standard. Worth noting are some characterful and comfortable bedrooms upstairs.
