SquareMeal Review of Rick Stein Barnes

Bronze Award

Despite being synonymous with Padstow, the home of his most prestigious restaurants, Rick Stein has expanded his empire far beyond Cornwall, to venues including Winchester, Marlborough and even Barnes, plus enviable coastal settings across the south west. Each restaurant offers something different, but anyone dining à la Stein can expect to find fish and seafood centre-stage, with signatures such as his Dover sole à la meunière, and seaside classics such as proper fish and chips alongside more exotic dishes inspired by the chef’s TV travels. There are exceptions: further inland and at pub-style venues, Sunday lunches and meaty game dishes get the Stein treatment. At everywhere bar the flagship Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, the vibe is casual and convivial – in general, you can turn up unannounced with your dog or kids and still receive a warm welcome from seasoned staff.

Very Disapointing

Awful staff & service. Clrlearly all staff hated their jobs and loathed being there. Drinks not refreshed once the bottle emptied, (it took an age to have the empty bottle taken away, as did it take an even greater age to have the cutlery packaging taken away, which littered our table for almost the entire duration of the meal!). Had we not visited Padstow's collection of restaurants, plus Fistral Beach, we most certainly would never, ever be back.

We have a gift card which is now, we are led to believe, an "old" card, and is on a different system. While this is most definitely not our fault, the unacceptable length of time taken to sort this out, (without an apology for the inordinate delay, incidentally), we were most defi itely made to feel as though it was.

As we are not planning to visit Cornwall any time soon, we are forced to offload the remaining balance at the Mortlake branch, (for some reason called "Barnes") which is most definitely going to be as a very last resort. Had we not had a remaining balance to get rid of, we most definitely would not be returning. Had we visited Mortlake as a first impression, and had not had the benefit of previous visits to all Cornwall's venues, we would most definitely be requesting a refund of the very large original balance on this gift card.

A 50th Birthday celebration, delayed due to pandemic hysteria, ruined by surly, unattentive, miserable staff. The 12.5% service charge was promptly added to the bill, of course. Once we had eventually caught the eye of one of the waiters.

Very, very disappointing. Most definitely NOT recommended.

Four happy diners ...then there was just one and he never ate raw shellfish

It's a lovely place, service is average and I really wanted some seafood having lived near La Rochelle for many years

Average sea food dish given the price, and the mayonnaise was caked over and dry on top.  It tasted fine. We were two couples, three of us ate from the seafood platter and the fourth didn't. He was the only one of us who didnt displayfood poisoning  symptoms within 48 hours.

i understood heavy November rainfall had caused a problem with the oyster suppliers and despite the illness caused by eating them and a 3/4 day holiday absolutely ruined, so far all I received was an apology, and the explanation above. I'm never going back despite my love of fruits de mer

For thirty years The Depot in Barnes was loved by locals who were concerned when Rick Stein took it over. However, it's still just as good, very friendly and the best fish and chips ever.

A great addition to Barnes
Had dinner here last night, having given up on the Depot some time ago. A perfect setting for a seafood restaurant, it was clearly still finding its way having only been open for a couple of weeks. Nevertheless, we had great service, really excellent food, and great value for money considering the quality of the cooking and ingredients. The décor has been tastefully upgraded, and there is a very nice bar should you wish to have a pre or post dinner drink. All in, a great addition to Barnes

Diappointing
As a long standing customer of The Depot in Barnes I was looking forward with anticipation to visiting it under the new ownership of Rick Stein. Desperately disappointing! The decor and piped music are that of a second rate hotel; the food was poor (they quite rightly did not charge for my dish); the service was polite but slow even though it was not full. So sad - they have an uphill climb to take before they start losing what were loyal clients.
