Few pubby aficionados would begrudge having the Priory Arms as their local. Stylistically stuck in the 1980s, this unreconstructed boozer has what big-chain designers and architects can never inject... soul. CAMRA-listed, it also sports a cracking range of real ales, strong lager and ciders in bottles and on tap: Sambrook’s, Suffolk’s Nethergate, Twickenham Fine Ales and Quadhop from Wiltshire’s Downton (no, the Earl of Grantham hasn’t branched out into brewing). Popular Sunday roasts are backed by a serviceable range of wines, and there’s plenty of interest in various burger combos, steaks and tapas-sized bites (from £4) ranging from classic albondigas, patatas bravas and chorizo casserole to globally inspired Arbroath smokie fishcakes, spare ribs, nachos and chicken satay. Staff seem genuinely happy to serve, and Sunday quiz nights are keenly contested.
