SquareMeal Review of Ma Cuisine

Bronze Award

After a much-needed wash & brush-up, John McClements’s French bistro is gleaming clean & sparkly. Not that much has changed: the tablecloths are still retro gingham, the barn-like ceiling still exposed to view. Nevertheless, the spruce-up has produced an air of intentional nostalgia, & the locals who had been frequenting the restaurant in dribs & drabs are now coming in their droves. They receive properly cooked French classics – coquilles St Jacques with thermidor sauce, black pudding en croûte with Dijon sauce, cassoulet & coq au vin – nicely served & at a fraction of the price of the West End. Likewise, the French wine list contains plenty of choice under £20. Vegetarians get slim pickings, but familiar French desserts (crêpe Suzette, rum baba) end meals on a high. Ma Cuisine will never be comfortable enough to be a destination restaurant, but as a local, it’s hard to beat.

Old-fashioned French home cooking

I had an early lunch at Ma Cuisine today and was very impressed by the quality of the food and the warmth and courtesy of the restaurant staff. I chose from the set menu a ham-hock terrine with foie gras, home-made grape chutney and cornichons, followed by cassoulet (confit duck leg with haricot beans and chorizo). It tasted like the best French home cooking, not your average restaurant food.

Excellent bistro
You can eat quite expensively or quiet cheaply here – excellent bistro style French food – busy yet informal.

Great local bistro
We have visited here a number of times and the food is always of a high standard and is true VFM. Service has ocassionaly been slow but it is worth the visit. The homemade black pudding en croute is a must.

We'd heard good reports and we were impressed by the food though the menu is a bit self consciously ‘old French’. The service was more than a bit over eager and the atoshpere – with some quaint old Kew characters on all sides – was definitely not youthful. We'd have been very happy if it was more reasonably priced too – recent repots that prices have ‘crept up’ are not wrong – its over the top for what its offering.

Ma Cuisine has had a face lift and there's a new menu too. We spent years trying to find a local restaurant that does good food at a fair price, and this is it! On top of the scrumptious food, there is fabulous French bread with excellent butter – free of charge; the house wine is good quality and very reasonable;a jug of tap water is usually offered before you have to ask; and the service charge is only 10%. The portions are large, the ambience great and the service friendly. It really is a winner!
