SquareMeal Review of Estiatorio Milos

Bronze Award

Part of an international chain that attracts a matching clientele, restaurateur Costas Spiliadis’s London outpost shows off a spanking-fresh ‘market’ of Mediterranean fish, with around 20 species waiting for diners to make their selection. It’s a justly confident way to sell a menu of sharing dishes, though it’s the only action in a rather plain and pale dining room. From the raw bar, you might choose oysters and clams, tuna sashimi or a Greek ceviche with wild Mediterranean herbs, beans and feta, while the list of classics features enough octopus, calamari and cuttlefish to eat with eight arms. Balance comes from veggie items including a dish of steamed wild and rarely seen greens. Unless you count the fried potatoes served with a small selection of steaks, your doctor is unlikely to disapprove of anything on the menu. Sadly, we can’t say the same about your bank manager.

Lunch Menu

The food at Milos is wonderful.  I have been eating  in this restaurant for quite a few years and always thought the lunch time menu good value.  Sadly it has been creeping up in price, £20 £25 £29 ....On this visit I noticed it had risen to £32.50 and a number of dishes had a rather large supplement charge.  We were celebrating two birthdays so added a couple of dishes from the al la carte menu forgetting how expensive they were.  The bill was huge, the meal gorgeous but regrettably we decided we would not be frequenting this restaurant as often as before.  It is no longer good value.

Pushy waiter and unexpected bill leave a sour taste...AVOID

What was a good team lunch spoiled by an unexpected £430 price for a fish included on our bill.  My team had been told £90 and the labels on the fish do not specify "per kg".  The fish was nearly 5kg for just 5 people, but when £90 had been quoted, we figured no problem, someone will take home the leftovers.  I questioned this with the restaurant at the end once the bill had arrived, and was told that my team was not paying attention.  My team isn't stupid and they would realise that this was over and above what we wanted to spend, had it been clear that this was not a £90 fish but a £430 fish!  The restaurant took advantage of our relaxed mood to sell us pricy stuff without our knowledge.  In addition, when trying to select wine, the sommelier was pushing £150 bottles.  Check you credit card is still in your pocket and walk past without stopping...I was robbed in this place.

The word "spectacular" comes to mind. From the moment you walk in with the seafood buffet gloriously displayed, to the subtle and yet impressive chefs working on the floor above with cheese, house-strained yoghurt and cheerful chatter, I think it is an experience, to eat in Milos, worth having and difficult to forget.

Terrible experience - quite obviously not interested in their clients
We visited here on Saturday evening and they have obviously squeezed far too many tables together. There was no space between any too the tables Our table was literally infant of the bar, with people trying to slip through and talking behind you. Had to complain three times before we got moved. When we went to order something off the menu we were told it would take to long. Then to top it all off they lost my husbands jacket, which he had to go downstairs to eventually find. Not what you expect when you pay £800 for 4 people, for a meal! Historically loved the food here, but due to all this, I will not be returning nor recommending to other friends. Manager quite frankly rude, and obviously rushed off his feet and not interested in his customers. His excuse was they were busy - not good enough!

Food lovely, but website and real life - quite different stories!
I visited for lunch and was looking forward to 'creating your own menu at the ever-changing and abundant fish market' and had looked at the A la carte menu picking out lots of lovely dishes. The website also promises - 'Whether your preference is grilled, fried, sashimi or tartare, or if you would like to discover a more traditional preparation such as kakavia or achnisto, there is the perfect catch waiting for you' What actually happened - we got given a set lunch menu with 3 choices for starter, main and dessert. No a la carte menu, no mention of the large fish display which I realised was there when I went to the bathroom after ordering. I'm not sure if it's just not avaiable at lunch - in which case this needs to be explained on the website - or if we just had a horrendous waiter who totally missed explaining anything to us! We both ordered starters and asked for an extra starter for the table - this totally threw our waiter - I don't think this is a totally wacky request - I made it clear we would obviously pay extra but he just didn't really understand that we wanted to try a few dishes and share. The starters were delicious - octopus that was cooked perfectly, crispy and delicious calamari and fresh and zingy salmon tartar. The main courses also really decent - but sadly they came served with the most sorry looking microwaved veg portion ever - just sitting all sad and limp on my plate next to my delicious Salmon and beans. Sadly the wonderful sides that other people have raved about were no where to be seen. The dessert selection was very poor - fruit, yoghurt or walnut cake, not that impressive. I had the cake it was ok. just ok. The restaurant was half full, mainly business lunches but a couple of ladies lunches. I will definitely go back on an evening service where I really truly hope i have a totally different experience that matches up with what they promise on the website!
