SquareMeal Review of Avenue

Bronze Award

Avenue has been a fixture of London’s dining scene since 1996, but it still manages to come across as a thoroughly modern brasserie. Part of the D&D restaurant group, which also operates Coq d’Argent in the City and German Gymnasium in King’s Cross to name but a few, Avenue occupies a large, light-filled building at the bottom of St James’s Street.

The Russel Sage designed restaurant welcomes guests through a dedicated bar space, while further back you’ll find the main dining area, as well as an intimate private dining room. Avenue manages to fill the space with stand-out features such as the twinkling wine-glass chandelier that sits in the room's centre, and the vibrant, large-scale artworks that line the walls.

The restaurant has served a few cuisines over the years, with its menu having taken inspiration from the likes of the US, South America and Asia across its long life. These days though, D&D veteran Arnold Ivey is overseeing the kitchen, opting to serve a refined selection of meat and fish dishes which champion British ingredients.

We’re happy to report that this shift in focus works, with the menu’s unassuming yet effective dishes hitting the spot – it’s also a rare pleasure in London these days to find a menu that doesn’t require you to share. Our starter was a simple, but cleverly assembled crab salad; a mound of sweet shredded Brixham crab paired with brown crab mayonnaise, ready to spread on two slices of toast.

This simple yet effective approach appeared again in our main course, a slab of lusciously fatty pork belly with a sticky-glazed crackling topping. We padded out our main with golden tripled-cooked thick-cut chips and a bowl of creamed spinach, before rounding things off with an unashamedly sugary treat of a mixed berry sundae. This delightfully nostalgic concoction combines chocolate sauce, and strawberry and raspberry ice cream, with a final crowning coming in the form of a swirl of whipped cream.

Prices reflect the area, but deals such as the great value set lunch menu (three courses for £20) and the oyster happy hour where you can shuck away for just £1 a pop help to draw people in, and we also hear that the lively weekend brunch is quite the party destination.

Good food, poor ambience- needs a make over
Went to The Avenue where I used to go years ago. The set menu was good- nice food ( though small portions) and service good, staff very helpful. But the tables/ chairs/ décor all very dated. Restaurant pretty empty. Seems to need a make over....

modern and chic
We started the evening at the wonderful long bar- beautifully decorated, attentive staff, nice drinks. Moved to the lovely dining area great food and good service. It was a bit quiet but maybe because we wnet late on a Tuesday evening. Definitely will return.

Excellent on every level
I had an excellent meal and wonderful service. The waiter overheard my friend saying happy birthday to me and brough over a desert with a candle (without being asked) which I thought was beyond what you can normally expect . Really loevly staff, great environment and excellent vfm on the fixed price menu. I will definitely be back.

I visited Avenue for lunch, the restaurant was full and had a really uplifting buzz in the air. The serving staff were attentive and good. The food was a different story, what can I say but average, nothing special pretty box standard which was extremely disappointing because for some reason I had expected something more. I probably wouldn't go again as there are much nicer places dine in the vacinity.

We were tremendously disappointed by the Avenue, having taken guests from overseas. One guest ordered a starter that was essentially half an iceberg lettuce on a skewer. The lobster and saffron risotto entree was short on lobster, lukewarm and very yellow with red juice. The hazelnut semifreddo and coffee granita was a mess. Service was slow. We do like the interior and there was a warm welcome on arrival but overall it he Avenue falls far short of its peers nearby.

Had a lovely welcome on arrival – the bar area was buzzing and the recently refurbished restaurant looked great. Service: a bit over attentive at first with constant water refills even though we had not even taken sip.. constant standing around to see if we finished a course and trying to take plates even though we were not done. Removing side plates whilst one of us was still eating their starter. Towards the end of the meal the restaurant was very busy so then it was more a matter of trying to get the attention of the waiters. Food. We decided to share a starter of ricotta and beetroot – they actually divided it on to 2 plates before serving – nice touch! Stone bass with spicy kale – a bit over cooked and the kale didn't really taste of any spice. Best part was the dessert – mini doughnuts with litle jugs of melted chocolate sauce, raspberry sauce and whipped cream – a DIY dessert that was delicious. When we got the bill we saw that there were a few cocktails added on (we only had a bottle of wine) which was obviously not right but we advised and it got corrected. I would probably go back to the bar but the food was not that inspiring.
