SquareMeal Review of Arros QD

Silver Award

Entering Arros QD feels like walking into the lobby of a luxury hotel; you’re greeted by a team of immaculately turned out staff, while grand surrounds include patent black walls, burnt orange furnishings and a specially designed chandelier which is made to look like a fistful of rice that’s been thrown into the air.

Once fully inside, you’ll notice an open kitchen complete with a chef’s counter and plenty of other extravagant flourishes, including gold cutlery. Such opulence should come as no surprise given who’s behind the operation – this is the debut London restaurant from three Michelin-starred Valencian chef Quique Dacosta, who is a seriously big name in his home country.

Interestingly, Dacosta’s focus here is paella (arros translates from Spanish as ‘rice’). This could be a hard sell, considering that rice is not typically seen as a high-end ingredient and because paella here can set you back as much as £90. Robust pricing aside though, this paella is worth shouting about.

It’s cooked using wood-burning stoves, with the aroma produced by the wood acting as an invisible ingredient of sorts, which really locks in the flavour. Paella here can be ordered in small or large portions (in defence of those high prices, the larger option can easily be shared between two or three), with both classic and contemporary versions of the famed Spanish dish available. We stuck to the newer iterations, sampling sticky black squid ink rice that tasted of all the delights of the ocean and was mingled with calamari and artichokes, before being rubbed with an oyster aioli.

Aside from the main event, Arros QD’s selection of small plates also impressed, with top shouts being the small but mighty pulled pork slider slicked with kimchi sauce, and a pile of glossy black cheese ‘stones’ that erupt with a thick filling of parmesan, manchego cream and cocoa butter (our waitress cheerily informed us that at Dacosta’s restaurant on the Costa Blanca, the dish is mixed in with real stones.)

A warm atmosphere and a well-chosen European wine list add further to Arros QD’s appeal, which was bustling on our mid-week visit (it will surely benefit from its plum Fitzrovia location). Quique Dacosta may have been a relative unknown on these shores up until now, but with a debut like this, we’re certain that’s about to change.

About

Three-Michelin-starred chef Quique Dacosta (who owns an eponymous restaurant on the Costa Blanca) has opened a premium paella restaurant in Oxford Street’s Plaza Building. The new two-floor project is backed by London-based Spanish group Ibérica, which has seven restaurants around the UK.

Arros QD focuses on rice, a product that does not currently have much presence in high end gastronomy. Although the site is high end, Arros QD will not be aiming for the same accolades as Dacosta’s Spanish flagship.

anniversary spoilt

What is the point in booking and reserving a table, to have my partner turned away from your restaurant? Last sunday I booked my anniversary meal at your restaurant for today for 4 people. I confirmed on Friday, but when I arrived at your restaurant after church today, I found out that my partner had been turned away by your staff! and was on their way home.

I have no words for my level of anger at your staff lack of professionalism, and lack of basic manners. This was the first time my partner had been out after shielding for many months, and instead of being seated, they were messed about and turned away. I could not believe it. I am also disappointed as I am a member of a local church, we are looking for a suitable restaurant which we can support, and your venue had been a favorite of mine for many decades.

What an excellent evening

A little bit on the pricey side but worth every penny. The staff is very attentive and polite. Paella was as close to the traditional one as you can get in London. The place gets busy, I would strongly suggest booking in advance.

The bar upstairs is fabulous.  I would definitely visit again.

What an excellent setting with charming service. Paellas were cooked to perfection on a blend of different woods and an open fire blazing away all within eyesight. The Tomahawk steak blew our socks off. This is now my favourite place to enjoy good company.

My guests and I enjoyed our Arros experience immensely! Every starter dish was just delicious and special. We ordered the traditional paella with Iberican pork which was beyond the best Paella I have ever had ! Great service and a warm atmosphere. Definitely to be repeated !

Greatest disappointment!!

Worst dinner experience recently.

We are a Spanish family that has been living in London for last 15yrs, and after going a number of times to Quique Dacosta restaurant in Denia (which is great) we were very excited about this new opening in London and we booked 2 months in advance to go for dinner yesterday.

Restaurant atmosphere is good and the cocktails we had at the bar were also nice.

We sat down at the table and the first surprise came... they did not have anymore any of the Soccarats (which is the speciality of the restaurant that waitress highly recommended while we had a cocktail) and they did not have lobster, so another 4/5 options with lobster gone... all this on a Saturday evening dinner!!!

Anyway we sat down and order our food, few starters and a couple of the traditional rices (theoretically takes 25min to prepare) and a couple of the contemporary rices (takes 10min).

After having starters we were informed that kitchen had some miscommunication (???) and rices were going to take a bit more time. The manager came 3 times to our table saying he was checking with the kitchen but never came back after to inform on timing to get the main courses. All in all we waited for 2hrs for the the first traditional rice to come and once we finished it, we were told that the second one would take another 15min!!! (not much sense if it takes 25min from when you order....).

We decided not to wait for the second rice and go for desserts after big disappointment about service, manager and how a restaurant of intended high quality managed the situation.

Conclusion: highly likely not to go again to restaurant, not recommended and Quique and his team should put a lot of effort in amending things if they want this restaurant to go well.
