SquareMeal Review of 16”West Brasserie (afternoon tea)

The name is a reference to the location of this brasserie, precisely 16 seconds west of the Greenwich Meridian Line. Housed in the shiny new Sammy Ofer Wing of the National Maritime Museum, 16” West is an architect’s dream of poured concrete floors, wraparound windows and monochrome. It’s not too cool for the nice, homely things in life – though the teapots are glass and the scrummy cakes appear as neat squares on angular plates (no flowery china here). Cream tea (£6.25) is served daily, likewise the full afternoon spread (£22), although the latter must be reserved in advance. The brasserie champions sustainable British produce, so expect Wiltshire ham and Scottish salmon in the sandwiches and free-range eggs in the Bakewell slice. Among the selection of loose-leaf, floral and bagged teas are organic and Fairtrade brands by Numi.
