About Museum of the Order of St John

The striking Museum of the Order of St John comes with a fascinating history, telling the story of an ancient religious military order, from its origins caring for sick pilgrims in 11th-century Jerusalem, through to its modern-day role with St John Ambulance.

Aside from its colourful history, the venue also offers a number of event spaces, which are available for exclusive hire. Built all the way back in 1504, the museum is full of eye-catching architectural elements and features interiors designed by John Oldrid Scott. Here, you’ll find rooms decorated with paintings dated from the 16th to the 20th centuries, alongside stained glass and antique furniture.

Naturally, such fragile artefacts mean hosting an event here does come without restrictions (no red wine or staining foods in the Museum Galleries and no decorations attached to the walls or floors.) Nonetheless, the venue is well suited to events and is often used for wedding ceremonies or seated lunches and dinners, as well as standing drinks receptions and conferences. The stand-out event space is The Cloister Garden, which is filled with medicinal herbs and plants and acts as a peaceful haven away from the busy streets of Clerkenwell (the museum is near to both Farringdon and Barbican stations, making it easily accessible.)

Given its rich history, party planners often incorporate a private tour of the historic rooms or a short talk on the history of the Order into their event, and you can impress guests by namechecking the venue’s television credits, including its appearance as a filming location for the BBC’s gripping journalism drama Press in 2018.

Testimonials For Museum of the Order of St John

'Wonderful venue'AUGUST, 2018

“I wanted to express my thanks and, specifically, those of my President for the use of your wonderful venue last night. The President was delighted with the turn out (the highest for a summer party in the last 6 years!) and many of the Fellows said to me and my colleague that they had thoroughly enjoyed the evening and would come back for a fuller visit in the future.”

Medical Society of London

'All the staff were polite, friendly and professional'MAY, 2018

“Feedback from guests was excellent with this being one of the best venues we have used. Personally I would like to thank you for all your help in setting up this event. You were a pleasure to deal with. All the staff were polite, friendly and professional. Thank you for all your help and support in making this event such a success.”

Wesleyan Assurance Society

'Thank you again for your above-the-call-of-duty additional facilitating for the latecomers'MAY, 2018

“The committee was overwhelmingly in favour of the Museum over other locations I had scouted. Obviously your location and the beauty of the building could hardly be matched but it was your helpfulness and positive attitude towards our endeavour that had particularly won them round. I cannot emphasise enough how much your own attitude to our booking and the concert really made your venue so wonderful a place to perform. Thank you again for your above-the-call-of-duty additional facilitating for the latecomers.”

'The organisation was second to none'MARCH, 2018

“Just a quick line to thank you and your colleagues for allowing us to host such a successful event last night. The organisation was second to none and the help and support we had from St John’s staff was fantastic. I also lost count of the number of complimentary comments I received from guests about the venue.”

'Everybody loved the venue'JANUARY, 2018

Thank you for being so helpful and for making our conference such a pleasant day. Everybody loved the venue – and they are a discerning group of people who have very high standards. The Curator’s fascinating and appropriate choice of artefacts was much commented upon. Your volunteers were splendid and very knowledgeable. I would certainly highly recommend the Museum of the Order of St John as a conference venue.”
