Things are nothing short of planktastic at this wine bar and deli (sister to its neighbour, Simple) – you can’t move for dead trees. Rough-hewn timber has been stacked, Jenga-style, to make the bar; seating is on tree-trunk bar stools, or mismatched wooden chairs at elderly wooden tables. But under the bark, Wood is a straightforward café-bar with a menu that embraces weekend brunches (full English, eggs Florentine); global ‘tapas’ such as beef, bean and chorizo stew, sesame-fried broccoli, or king prawn laksa; and various sharing plates – plus lots of wine to wash it all down. The selection of cheese and cured-meat platters includes a nod to the bar’s former incarnation as Fyg (a £30 plate laden with meats, cheese and salads). Ask for recommendations if you’re navigating the 50-strong wine list (which includes a decent line in Malbecs), but don’t get a splinter standing at the bar.
