SquareMeal Review of The Square and Compasses

The interiors may be standard-issue country pub (exposed timbers, low beams, polished wood tables, open fire), but the recently revived Square & Compasses is a refreshing addition to the Essex dining scene. With its vigorously English food, the lengthy menu has a decidedly old-fashioned flavour: here you might find plates of local ham with two free-range eggs, fries & crusty bread, homemade steak & kidney pie with garden peas & mash, or warm pigeon breast & bacon salad with a mustard-seed dressing; also check out the sirloin steak topped with garlic, flat mushrooms & a real-ale rarebit. An inviting out-of-the-way location adds to the charm.

We ate at the Square and Compasses for the first time yesterday and were very impressed. Situated in a very rural position this is one pub which needs sat nav to find it but if yesterday is anything to go by you will not be disappointed. As soon as we arrived we were met with amazingly delicious smells from the existing diners, sitting with food which looked like a work of art. Indeed when we received our main courses we weren't sure whether to eat it or photograph the food…it looked and smelt wonderful, tasted exquisite. For starter we had baby plaice which was a large fish and lovely. For main I decided on Belly of pork after asking whether it would be fatty as belly is. Having been told that the belly was pressed to remove fat I was delighted that I was not disappointed,: it tasted amazing. I received a tower of dauphinoise potato topped with amazing tasting belly on top of which were apple fritters and a stick of crackling, all in a delicious sauce. It was so good it made you want to lick the plate clean. Every time someone was given food by the attentive waitresses everyone on surrounding tables wanted to know what you were having and commented on the presentation which was superb. There were big discussions amongst diners to try to decide which dish was the best. The Square and Compasses truly deserves its title of ‘Pub of the Year’ -Amazing.
