SquareMeal Review of The Springer Spaniel

Don’t be fooled by this roadside inn’s ordinary-looking exterior. Inside this relaxed village pub with old prints, cosy woodburners and high-backed settles manages to please both beer-loving locals (try Dartmoor Brewery’s Jail Ale) and foodies wanting high-end cooking. Given the pub is little sister to the Michelin-starred Treby Arms in Devon, and owned by former Masterchef: The Professionals winner Anton Piotrowski, the high standard of the food is no surprise. Head chef South African-born Ali Fraser was sous-chef at The Treby and several dishes bear the gastropub’s hallmark, including the black pudding Scotch eggs (served as a bar snack) and the honey-glazed duck breast with caramelised cauliflower, braised chicory and vanilla mash. Be sure to try Piotrowski’s signature Masterchef-debuted pudding Treby’s Gone Carrots, which is sticky carrot cake and citrusy cream cheese, covered with chocolate popping candy and a chocolate ‘soil’ – it’s inspired by his beloved allotment – served inside a flowerpot into which is ‘planted’ an orange-infused carrot, no less. Like Treby, the Springer Spaniel goes to huge lengths to source high-quality local ingredients. Vegetarians are well catered for too, underlining that this is a pub with something for everyone.
