It was a dismal day for east London’s flamboyant polysexual party posse when The George & Dragon, a stalwart of the original Shoreditch scene, closed in 2015. But G&D landlord Richard Battye has relocated a mile away, turning 1830s boozer The Queen Adelaide into an every-bit-as-bonkers late lounge as the one he vacated – complete with gloriously tacky surroundings. With historic gay bars closing down in their droves, this old Queen’s new reign is cause for celebration. And celebrate its customers do: at camp quiz nights, lip-synch extravaganzas, loony live happenings and ‘filthy’ disco nights called ‘Bitchin’ and ‘Tipsy Girl’. Getting tipsy on frozen Margaritas – and wines, beers and cider that you probably won’t find at The Savoy – is a doddle; drinks are cheaper than some of the clientele’s get-ups. There again, as high priestess of camp, Dolly Parton, puts it, ‘it costs a lot of money to look this cheap’.
