With the addition of this new Searcys-run brasserie in the stately Orangery, a visit to the splendid palace near Oxford is even more rewarding. Playing the part of Churchill as you parade around the house and grounds will be much enhanced after a refuelling stop. Drop in for ‘Elevenses’, or brunch as it’s more commonly known, and eggs Florentine or pancakes with maple syrup and bacon should give you enough pep to continue your tour. Those flagging somewhat later in the day will find seasonal local and estate produce on the lunch menu; expect the likes of guinea fowl and crayfish ballottine or twice-baked Oxfordshire Blue soufflé with spinach and wild mushrooms on the quarterly changing list. Proper afternoon tea is available from noon, but traditionalists will wait until 4pm for the carefully made sandwiches, old-fashioned cakes and scones – along with a sneaky glass of Searcys cuvée brut Champagne.
