3 of us had Sunday lunch here. I love the venue, it’s huge, with lots of different spaces and styles. It was very quiet, but I put this down partly to it being an unusually sunny day, everyone wanted to be outside, not in, tucking into a roast (apart from me). There were only about 15 people there the whole time we were, I hope that they are busier during the week because we will definitely be back. The staff were all very friendly and the 80’s playlist made our day – we had great fun singing along to Mel and Kim, Kim Wilde, Bon Jovi and many more. Now onto the important stuff – the food and drink. We ate the following – Crab and avocado and crispy toasts (lots of lime, delicious), cheddar croquettes (not really a starter but we couldn’t resist), followed by the roast chicken with all the trimmings (everything cooked perfectly and excellent quality), a fillet steak and chips (again superb meat), and the burger with Oxtail (the only time we have left chips on a plate, we were all stuffed). We had a really nice bottle (or two) or Rose to celebrate what felt like one of the last days of summer, and then after a suitable break we finished off with a passion fruit cheesecake and boozy eton mess (the gin soaked strawberries certainly packed a punch). I look forward to a return visit.

Last week I was lucky enough to enjoy a breakfast meeting at The Jones Family Project in Shoreditch. What I quickly learnt was that this was much more than just a restaurant but rather a multi-faceted social space. The restaurant was formed by 4 close friends with the aim of creating a unique space where people can relax and enjoy good food and drinks in a comfortable environment. What is really exciting about this venture is that it is constantly changing and evolving, so both new customers and loyal regulars are always going to experience something slightly new. As we went at breakfast time we ate upstairs, which had a very colourful and open vibe. It was a welcoming space with intricate, cool details throughout the room, there was something to always point at and talk about. Interestingly at the front of the restaurant there is a 'private office for one' supported with a printer and throughout the restaurant there are sockets to charge laptops thus showing how the project encourages a working atmosphere. This is really a versatile space for people to work in, eat or just relax. Let me move onto the food before talking you through downstairs. I ordered a delicious plate of Free Range poached eggs on wholemeal bread and a side of Ginger Pig bacon. The eggs were cooked to perfection that once cut into oozed out yolky goodness. But the bacon was the real winner on the plate! I usually don't order bacon, as I fear it will be undercooked and too fatty, but it was recommended to me so I could hardly refuse. It was ridiculously crispy and flavoursome, honestly I would return for the bacon alone! After breakfast we walked around downstairs, which had a completely different vibe to upstairs. It was darker and in a sense a lot more formal. The lower level restaurant focus’ on carefully sourced, high quality ingredients, and from peeking at the menu I would say there is a strong emphasis on meat. There are many different choices of seating areas downstairs whether you prefer orange leather chesterfield style sofas of cut out doll house style booths or even more private alcoves the restaurant facilitates all of this. It is the perfect space to rent out for parties and there is even a ‘stage set area’, which changes regularly where guests can rent out for the night (£35pp) and enjoy a one of a kind private dinning experience. I am already planning my next trip, this time for dinner, as I want to indulge in the extensive dinner menu, which looks incredible. So whether you want a quick breakfast, an indulgent dinner or just a drink makes sure not to miss The Jones Family Project as it is a really special place that is uniquely one of a kind.

We went The Jones Family Project as we wanted to experience this family-run business based in Hoxton. As they were in the process of changing menus, we decided to go with taking a snapshot from the past and future. Whilst we made our menu selections during chatting to the friendly Anna (Anna Watts, one of the owners) and Cristiano (executive head chef and also co-owner/founder) to get an insight into the new dishes, as well as being taken on a tour of the premises, we sipped on cocktails of a rum negroni (with a refreshing addition of grapefruit – from the current cocktail menu) and a peashoots pisco mojito with pisco aba, lime juice and honey (from the new cocktail menu soon to arrive). It reminded us of pisco sours we had enjoyed whilst on holiday in Peru. We tucked into starters of lightly spiced squid and crispy aubergine involtini (from the current menu), mains of baked salmon, Jones’ Chuck burger and creole spiced chicken with a lime mayo and vibrant salsa (from past and future menus), and desserts of orange tart and brandy bread and butter pudding. The baked salmon was enjoyable but we would have preferred the original seabass on the current menu, as salmon has too strong a flavour for this lighter dish. However, loved the heat from the creole spices on the chicken which went perfectly with the lime mayo and the palate cleansing salsa. Also, the burger was juicy and complemented by the pickles. Even though we were stuffed by this point, we soldiered on and we dived into our dessert which were very moreish – and a great end to the meal. We could not leave without trying two more cocktails from their new summer menu, so we opted for the basil and lavender mojitos. They are light, fragrant and have floral notes and are perfect to bring the summer in!

I have now been there twice: Great range of different spaces in one restaurant. First, on my own, I ate in the light ground floor, and had delicious soup with scrumptious salad for a mere £8. (Though the healthy effect was spoilt by succumbing to a really melt-in-the-mouth brandy bread and butter pudding). The second time I and a colleague went for the set lunch formula, downstairs in comfortable red padded bench seats. Two courses for £14.50: he loved the sea-bass (on a lovely green bed of great veg and anya potatoes), and I enjoyed the roasted veg with lovely smooth light goats cheese. Both came on delightful large curved hand-made looking plates (or should they be described as shallow bowls?) We again couldn't resist puddings: A strikingly flavoursome orange tart with creme fraiche, and a tiramisu served in a little lidded glass jar. Our banquettes were in a row of three with a clever outline of a roof shape- so you got the feeling of separateness without losing any of the light. Other spaces in the restaurant had other arrangements: upholstered bucket chairs round tables; private spaces with lovely wooden tables; seats at the bar. I think it could cater for almost any grouping or style! And the ladies WC has an amusing decorative twist!
