A Balham favourite for years, The Exhibit continues to pull in the locals with attractions including bottomless fizz at brunch, friendly staff, alfresco tables and a cosy 20-seat cinema. With an arty-industrial look, the monochrome-tiled ground floor bar serves up decent cocktails and craft beers, with DJs until 2am at the weekend. Upstairs, the kitchen offers crowd-pleasing burgers, ribs and chicken wings alongside more far-reaching flavours such as spiced mutton, or roast pollock with chilli and caper sauce. Our butternut squash and ricotta tacos had a good hit of charred chilli, and the truffle chicken burger with crispy onion rings is every bit as good as it sounds. There were a few off notes though: crispy squid bafflingly served on a bed of peas and summer berry baked Alaska made with stewed apples, not berries. Our advice is to stick to the burgers and those bottomless bubbles.
