SquareMeal Review of The Drunken Duck Inn

A reliable, renowned gastropub in the heart of the Lake District, the Drunken Duck provides stunning views, several roaring fires & excellent, wholesome fare for travellers & locals alike. An onsite brewery (Barngates Brewery) ensures freshly brewed beer is available, while dishes are typically hearty in the bar (lunchtime brings soup, sandwiches & ploughman's), more ambitious in the restaurant: confit of duck with rocket & chilli jam ahead of, perhaps, grilled halibut on asparagus & crispy smoked pancetta bruschetta with a poached egg & truffle oil hollandaise. British & Irish cheeses get their own menu, & it's all ably supported by a wine list that is strong on wines by the glass.

Birthday celebration
Went here for my big birthday bash based on reviews of decent restaurants near Grasmere. We were given a 9pm booking as anything earlier was not available. Admittedly we arrived 10 minutes late as the sat nav took us along a dead end lane but our table was still available. When we made the booking we were asked if there was anything we particularly did not eat and we told them just no pork. We were presented with the menu which was bizarre. There was no chicken, beef or lamb, just one fish dish and some odd veg dishes. There was nothing on the menu that any of us was interested in but it was too late to try to find another restaurant. On the foot of the menu it states to please ask if there were any other preferences. We asked the waiter if there was any other choice and he firmly said no, that was the menu and he needed to 'push' us into making a decision. We all reluctantly chose some indescribable Menu option and tried to make the most of my 60th birthday celebration. No mention was made by the staff about the celebration even though they were well aware this was why we booked. Very disappointing evening and I felt very sorry for my family who had tried to arrange something quite special for me. We will not be visiting again nor recommending.

We discovered the Drunken Duck when staying at Hawkshead several years ago. Enjoying a meal in the bar along with beer brewed on the premises was great fun. As indeed was the story of how the pub got it's name. Attached to the bar is a restaurant, with great quality food that we were surprised to find in such an 'out of the way' Lakeland inn. Cod served with mini black puddings exemplified the adventurous nature of the menu. We have returned on several occaisions spanning several years and found the food (and beer!) quality to be high and consistent. Cream tea in the garden on a sunny day was also a real treat. We have stayed overnight in the rooms of the adjoining building, which were well furbished, light and airy. This is a firm favourite and enjoyed also by our young children.
