Don’t expect supermarket-style shelves loaded with bottles at this friendly proposition on swiftly gentrifying Nunhead Green. Although The Beer Shop really is a shop, it also incorporates a colourful, airy lounge-cum-bar with a drinks menu of several dozen niche craft beers (mainly from London breweries). Staff encourage you to try as you buy. The husband-and-wife owners man a hatch at the back of the room, from where three rotating draught options and the cellar’s many bottles are dispatched. Choices range from relatively well-known beers such as Brixton Brewery’s Reliance Pale Ale to special releases from the likes of Siren, plus on-tap options such as Monacus: a fruity, amber draught ale from Northern Monk. Everything can be taken away: bottles at a £1 discount; draught ales in nifty laminated boxes. Various beer-related events are also held, confirming that The Beer Shop is well set to become a community gem.
