SquareMeal Review of The Bagel Shop

Bronze Award

The Bagel Shop is the first bricks-and-mortar home for Eat New York, whose signature bagels have seen their street-food truck attract increasingly long queues at festivals since they launched in 2015. The Northern Quarter restaurant is an industrial-chic space with a flash of New York cool. Cocktails put their spin on NYC classics, taking inspiration from Manhattan to Staten Island, and there’s a decent range of beers, but the real attraction is the food.

Bagels are baked fresh daily and stuffed with locally sourced salt beef brisket, cured for eight days and then slow-roasted and steamed. Our Grill Melt bagel was a messy triumph, the intensely flavoured, tender hot salt beef layered with grilled cheese, jalapeño, pickle, house sauce and mustard. The other must-try is the classic Reuben sandwich. Two weeks in the making, the towering beauty brings together hot stacked pastrami, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing. The buttery soft, charred pastrami, available by the half-pound or full pound, comes from 14-day salt-cured American brisket, dipped in house rub then smoked in-house for 15 hours. A genuine bite of the Big Apple.
