Surely better value elsewhere?
This restaurant is bright and spacious, with a delightful view, and the waiting staff are friendly and efficient. However, the lunch which I was served there yesterday was very poor value for money. A Bellini aperitif would not have passed muster in Venice but was acceptable. Potted crab was nothing of the sort, just a miniature tumbler containing a few teaspoons of over-chilled white and brown crab meat accompanied by three minuscule pieces of unbuttered toast. A main course portion of cep risotto was good on flavour, less so on consistency and was of starter size. As I was (not surprisingly) still hungry, I ordered two portions of English cheese and for my £7 received two tiny pieces, with a few grapes and strips of celery (cheese and accompaniments all painfully over-refigerated) and a few small biscuits. The wine list was unimaginative and over-priced. No vintages were shown. A glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and another of Chablis both represented the bottom of the scale for each variety. I departed £55 (including tip) poorer and still hungry. There is surely better value to be found elsewhere in Oxford. This place has great potential but at present this is far from being realised.
