Occupying the corner where its two namesake streets intersect, Tariff & Dale consists of a spacious bar – including a cosy booth in an old lift shaft – and a more formal basement dining space. This former cotton warehouse is both effortlessly cool and inviting, with lovingly restored industrial artefacts. The drinks list includes flights of beer, G&Ts in large copa glasses, and nine classic cocktails. The menu contains a section dedicated to sausage rolls: from pork and pistachio to Lancashire Blue, sliced for sharing and served with ketchup (either Curious Porter or ’nduja). Sourdough pizzas are exceptionally light and chewy with simple toppings such as salty Ogden Cheddar with a particularly good air-dried ham. A series of chef’s plates including beetroot-cured salmon or flat-iron steak add a more formal note to the repertoire, and desserts are simple and elegant – creamy white chocolate cheesecake spiked with mango and passion fruit, perhaps.
