SquareMeal Review of Slice - Swansea

Phil Leach & Helen Farmer gathered plenty of experience at some of the UK’s top restaurants (including The Walnut Tree & The Horn of Plenty) before setting up shop in this tiny, wedge-shaped building in one of Swansea’s smarter suburbs. Hugely popular with locals, Slice has just 16 covers so it’s wise to book ahead. Although trained as a chef, Helen’s main role here is to provide polished & friendly service, while Phil gets to work in the tiny glass-fronted kitchen downstairs. His cooking is clean & contemporary, with minimal fuss, clear flavours & maximum use of Welsh ingredients. Expect Monmouthshire air-dried ham with oven-dried marinated tomatoes followed by roast loin of Gower lamb & a mini shepherd’s pie, with late-summer pudding & Pembrokeshire clotted cream for dessert.

Indulgent VFM
Indulgent menu, beautifully cooked with the best ingredients. Indecently cheap, improbably run-down location and signs it is aping Heston's Fat Duck (down to the logo!) abound but you can forgive the lack of originality for the superb VFM

A small but perfectly formed space. Uses locally sourced, seasonal ingredients in some interesting ways. Very unstuffy and unpretentious, the chef can be viewed, goldfish bowl like, through the window of the ground floor kitchen of this converted shop. The diners have more privacy in the upstairs restaurant! The chef's wife who is also the main waiter is willing and very able to relay any questions you may have on the sourcing of ingredients. The emphasis is on the food rather than the surroundings which personally I think is correct, as you can't eat soft furnishings but often have the cost of them added to the bill.
