Always at the livelier end of NQ’s old guard, Simple now feels more polished thanks to a cool blue refurbishment with a subtle Scandi edge. The enterprise belongs to a small group that also includes nearby Cord and next-door Wood. It occupies an unusual elevated spot above Tib Street, with terrace tables made for trend-spotting as young Manchester goes by. Inside, there’s Prosecco on tap, and bar staff dispensing fairly priced cocktails and bottled beer. By day the kitchen produces burgers, salads and sandwiches, plus weekend brunch. At night the burgers are joined by small plates including a retro leek and mushroom vol-au-vent, or more of-the-moment slow-cooked pork ribs with kimchi slaw. Main courses range from five-spice duck tacos, or ‘posh’ chicken curry with Cajun spices and coconut, to smoked mac & cheese. Look out for offers early in the week, especially Tuesday’s shake and steak (8oz sirloin) for £8.
