Following the re-birth of Chatsworth Road’s once-famous street market, Shane’s is adding some extra foodie intent and local endeavour to the neighbourhood. The result is a tidy, squeezed-in space with just a few tables and a counter overlooking the street, but there’s plenty going on here. Owner Shane Harrison ticks most of the organic, seasonal and foraging boxes (right down to pickings from Hackney Marshes), and the result is a short, sharp menu that might deliver salt beef and horseradish croquettes or marinated gurnard with fennel and orange, ahead of mackerel and gooseberries with crispy potato and kohlrabi or braised lamb accompanied by white beans, garlic and spinach. To finish, perhaps try rhubarb fool or chocolate pot with rose-water jelly. The short wine list has plenty of decent drinking by the glass or carafe, and there are regular BYO nights.
