SquareMeal Review of Savoy Grill by Gordon Ramsay

Silver Award

The legendary Savoy Grill has hosted a long list of famous diners since it opened in 1889, including Oscar Wilde, Charlie Chaplin and Frank Sinatra. You'll feel like an A-lister too, seated in the plush dining room beneath glittering chandeliers: "I love the experience whenever I go here," declares one devotee. Now a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, the menu pays its dues to The Savoy's culinary heritage, featuring omelette Arnold Bennett and peach Melba (both created here), as well as French staples that would be familiar to the hotel's first chef, Escoffier. But the main event is the "wonderful meat": generous grills and chops, with classic sauces such as marrowbone and shallot, feature alongside braises, roasts and pies, plus daily treats from the trolley – Wednesday is our favourite day for lunch, when beef Wellington is the star of the show. A traditional wine list lends support, while polished staff include "a helpful and knowledgeable sommelier". In short, the Savoy Grill delivers.

About

The Savoy Grill has been home to some iconic celebrity moments, with Winston Churchill, Marylin Monroe and James Dean having all passed through The Savoy’s gilded doors. The Savoy Grill by Gordon Ramsay most definitely takes the lead from the decadence of the hotel and offers a dining experience packed full of ‘gourmet glamour’.

The Savoy Grill was restored to its former glory during The Savoy Hotel’s £200-million refit. Burnished mirrors, polished wood finishes, crisp white table clothes and shimmering chandeliers all add to the decadent style of this restaurant. The classic menu is host to an array of favourites - most particularly Gordon’s signature beef wellington served with crêpes suzette that have the added drama of being flambéed at the table. As expected, the grill offers a varied choice of meat, fish and seafood - lobster Thermidor, Scottish langoustines, roasted Orkney scallops or grilled Dover sole all feature. For something hearty, the Sunday roast menu offers a salt-bake leg of lamb, roast suckling pig, salmon coulibiac or a traditional rib of beef served with Yorkshire puddings.

Gordon Ramsay

Chef Patron

Gordon Ramsay is quite possibly the western world’s most famous chef. He had a tough start in life - his father was a violent alcoholic - and a career in football was derailed by a knee injury. Ramsay learnt his craft from the best in the business including Marco Pierre White, Albert Roux, Guy Savoy and Joël Robuchon, his sheer determination and intensely competitive streak setting him apart from most of his peers. Restaurant Gordon Ramsay opened in 1998 and gained its third Michelin star in 2001. It was around this time that Boiling Point - a documentary about Ramsay’s quest to win three stars that showed the shockingly brutal nature of his kitchens - aired and made him the most notorious chef in Britain and kickstarting an extraordinary media career. He has gone on to open around 35 restaurants globally including Pétrus and Lucky Cat.

We visited here on a warm Sunday lunchtime - the atmosphere was a little subdued as the restaurant was only half full. More people seemed to be in the Afternoon Tea area where there was some music. Maybe they would attract a few more visitors if they had some music in there too?? The food was great - they were were very helpful with the menu and we did enjoy our time there, however it wouldn't be on my list of places to rush back to - just because it was a little dark in there and lacked some atmosphere.

Super meal, real quality and value too. Proper food, not messed around with. Thoroughly recommended. And it's still a pub where you can have a pint too!

This is a great restaurant for traditional English dishes both on the a la carte and set menu options. The prices can range from reasonable to quite expensive depending on which dish you choose but the food is well prepared and tasty. The service excellent and the venue is great being located with the Savoy Hotel itself. This is a great place to treat yourself for that special day out.

The food is fantastic, the quality of the products used is evident along with the time and effort put into presentation. The service is exactly what you would expect from the Savoy and more; polite and friendly staff are waiting to make your dining experience one to remember. Excellent!
