It’s all set in a rambling, extended 14th-century cottage that has had an unfussy, rustic chic makeover, but keeps in tune with the age of the building – bright colours with heavy beams,
blackboards and log fires, that sort of thing. And what a success it has been. This back lane pub close to the church has a kitchen that follows a philosophy of good food, fresh local ingredients
and flexible dishes; the style, a bit of modern British meets Mediterranean, has proved a huge hit. Garlic squid with rocket and polenta rubs shoulders with pheasant, honey jus and parsnip crumble,
while occasional oriental influences add extra colour. The style is wide ranging enough to take in pub classics such as burger, red onion relish and fries and fish and chips with minted mushy peas
(which don’t come much better). Regional beers and a fair selection of wines by the glass, too, and there’s a great garden.
