Following a subtle but extensive refurbishment, this village boozer is back in business with a new chef poached from The Cricketers at Clavering(famed as the pub owned by Jamie Oliver’s parents). The menu sticks firmly to tried-and-tested pub grub (steak, sausages, chicken and chips), but the real draw is the traditional Sunday roast: choose from three meats with mountains of crisply roasted potatoes, fluffy Yorkshire puds, a porcelain bowl of English vegetables and sauces galore. To drink, a short wine list provides the usual suspects and there are beers for the real ale buffs. Inside, the original beams and slightly haphazard layout make for cosy drinking, while the pleasant, raised garden is good for summer lunch with the kids. It may not outshine the nearby competition, but the new-look Rose & Crown is already a hit with the locals.
