You’d be unlikely to find Pie & Ale after more than three pints – it’s hidden in the semi-open arcade belonging to office development The Hive – so it might be wise to start an evening here. Opened by bread and wine specialists Bakerie, the venture is devoted to the earthier appeal of a pie and a pint. Both are made in-house, with the own-brewed Yippie Pie Ale on tap alongside eight local cask ales on rotation and a choice of 50 international craft beers. These are served from two bars in a likeably understated, airy, wood-dominated space. A handful of pavement tables provide alfresco opportunities. Meaty bar snacks (pork bites, two kinds of chicken wings) might keep the wolf from the door, but there are some compelling fillings among the eight-strong pie selection: try boar, venison and pheasant; cheese, potato and leek; or steak braised with mushrooms and the house beer.
