Pepper Saint Ontiod is one in the eye for those who think Docklands destinations are all bland & cheerless. This eclectically styled pub successfully plays safe haven for ‘don’t-wannabe’ suits & drinkers from the neighbourhood (‘Ontiod’ is an acronym for ‘on the Isle of Dogs’). ‘Grandma’s house’ seems to be the inspiration for the design in the airy ground-floor bar & upstairs games/function room: those pleated lampshades, wall clocks & cushions could only have come from eBay. Meanwhile, the kitchen spends its time knocking out bargain-priced crowd-pleasers of gammon, egg & chips, burgers, salt beef sandwiches & ploughman’s. There’s a tidy choice of beers too: usual suspects such as Guinness & Grolsch have their place, but it’s worth shelling out for pints of Adnams Lighthouse or Truman’s Summer Runner.
