A much-needed refurb has re-energised this plush hotel restaurant (named after the iconic Whitehall 1212 phone number). The frayed, art-deco style has been updated with fancy red velvet banquettes & thick, lush carpets, & there’s also a new bar with an equine theme (think contemporary chandeliers, horsey motifs & oil paintings of cavalry charges). Native produce meets European cuisine on a menu with prices to match the hotel’s five-star status – witness a tartare of Casterbridge beef with a quail’s egg yolk & parsley emulsion or Welsh sea bass with globe artichoke, spring onion mash & roasted fish jus. The wine list has a French accent, but don’t miss the cocktails inspired by distinguished hotel guests of yore – the Churchill is an uncompromising mix of bourbon, tobacco syrup & aromatic bitters.
