Formerly reserved for members of The Polish Club, but now open to all, the bar at Ognisko merits investigation – not least for its range of magnificent, generously poured vodka Martinis. The drinks list also covers numerous gin and whisky-based classics, but Poland’s favourite spirit rules in a range of house cocktails such as Tough Love (rye stirred with Davna red vodka, ‘orange’ wine and Martini Rosso). Otherwise, sip a ginger and raspberry Mule on the covered terrace while chomping on reasonably priced Polish bar snacks and diet-busting desserts guaranteed to ward off the worst Warsaw winter. Set in a grand stuccoed townhouse, the formal old-school room looks like something out of John Le Carré’s The Spy Who Came in from the Cold – although ‘ognisko’ translates as ‘hearth’ and the welcome is accordingly warm.
