SquareMeal Review of Noura Belgravia

Bronze Award

Dreamt up by two brothers who found fame in Paris during the 80s, the Noura chain has several outlets in the capital, including this impressive flagship in Belgravia– a two-tiered eatery comprising a casual brasserie and a more classy restaurant. The massive menu is built for sharing and covers all bases from hot and cold mezze to intensely succulent slabs of roasted or grilled meat (the mixed shawarma offers a bit of everything) and some terrific veggie choices ranging from meatless moussaka to bamieh (okra cooked with tomato and coriander). For afters, Lebanese-inspired ice creams, baklava or aish el saraya (a richly caramelised bread pudding with clotted cream) should fit the bill. A wallet-friendly lunch menu (£22.50) feeds the business crowd, while black-tied service keeps things slick and professional.

Overpriced and underwhelming
Visited on 23rd December for a family get together. Very disappointing. Not very welcoming despite providing a plate of raw vegetables as a welcome. Gin and tonic priced at £9.50 each. Starters were good. My main course was bland and unappetising. My partner was brought the wrong main course and no apology was forthcoming. When the bill came, it did not reflect the standard or quantity of food provided . Starter and main course with drinks worked out at about £60 a head. Will definitely not visit again.

Noura Belgravia
Despite the somewhat incongruous location of not-quite Belgravia/ the fringes of Victoria, a trip to Noura is definitely worthwhile. Both the food and the service were top notch. Our corner table afforded us a good view of the restaurant, which felt light and spacious, furnished in a contemporary fashion. Many tables were taken and yet there was no sense of intrusion from other diners with staff placing guests at a distance. Nothing seemed too much trouble for the staff either, bringing extra dishes/ drinks/ cutlery and all the items we ordered arrived promptly and with good presentation. The great beauty of Lebanese food is the choice and that most items come as small dishes, hence allowing for a wide range. While I have definitely eaten better hummus elsewhere (ours was surprisingly bland), the grilled halloumi was superb and even better was raw lamb, served with red onions and mint (akin to a Lebanese take on steak tartare). Our bottle of local Chateau Ksara white was also a successful food match. We departed full and satisfied.
