SquareMeal Review of No. 5

2010 felt like the year of the Italian restaurant in London, with more openings than you could shake a grissini stick at. As a result, it has been hard for old-stagers such as No 5 to keep the punters interested – although this ‘one-stop shop for a night out’ does have the virtue of an elegant, members’ club location, an outdoor terrace with views of Cavendish Square & free entry to the nightspot downstairs. The decor may once have been modish, but a visual assault of red leather chairs & felt banquettes now seems OTT & far too glamorous for the neighbourhood trattoria food on offer. Dishes such as gnocchi with tomato & ricotta, calf’s liver with grilled polenta or duck breast with grilled vegetables & balsamic vinegar are hardly likely to get the pulse racing. The cocktail bar downstairs is a hotter ticket, with its smart looks & matching mixology.

Not only the most stunning view but the best food and cocktails you can wish for.

Sumptuous decor, attentive service and a good value lunch menu make this an attractive, if quirky, choice for a central London meal. The central location makes it perfect before or after a shopping trip or business meeting and a table by the window gives a good view over Cavendish Square. The public restaurant is still little known, so you're well away from crowds. Recherche is the word.

A grand place to eat. A good menu. Not too fancy, especially compared to the setting. The wine list is decent. It's a fun place. I always enjoy going. And with the added bonus of being above a night club & bar, it's a one stop shop for a night out. Been a few times. Will go again. FA London

No.5 is a great bolt-hole for an upmarket and private lunch or dinner in the Oxford Circus area. Not many people know it’s open to the public so guests feel privileged to be invited there. The sumptuous surroundings and well spaced tables add to the feeling of luxury. At lunch it is never too busy and the food is good modern Italian, if not particularly exciting. Pricing is a little on the high side, for mains, but there are also a lot of better value pasta dishes. Service is on the button as it never gets too busy. At dinner the deep red dining room and plush seating s really comes into its own, complemented by the chi-chi clientele. Also note that the bars are open to non-members for free, except at weekends where they charge £20 to enter the building. Drop in during the rest of the week and have the experience for nothing. Bar closes 3am.
