McDonald's has announced that from this morning (8 July) breakfast will be reinstated at the majority of its restaurants in the UK and Ireland.

After the successful trial of a reduced brekfast menu at 42 branches in late June, 1250 more restaurants will now begin to serve the limited menu. This means that 28 stores will continue to not serve breakfast, while 92 further stores still remain closed.

Although customers will be able to get their hands on an iconic McMuffin, the company has said that for the moment they will still not offer porridge, bagels or wraps as part of the limited menu.

In an email sent to customers before the initial 42 McDonald's restaurants began serving breakfast again, UK and Ireland McDonald's CEO Paul Pomroy said: "As with our main menu, we will have a limited menu at breakfast but we’ve kept the classics – hash browns, McMuffins and pancakes all return."

He added that the reduced nature of the menu was "because [they] have fewer people in the kitchen."

This follows the reopening of 280 McDonald's branches for walk-in customers last week, meaning that customers were able to order in person for the first time since restaurants closed in March. Until then, McDonald's was only offering a drive-thru service, alongside delivery in certain locations through the UberEats app.

McDonald's fans will however still need to abide by strict social distancing guidelines when going into a branch, in order to keep everyone safe. There will be a one-way system imposed inside restaurants as well as hand sanitiser being provided at cleaning stations. On top of this, seating areas, toilets and lifts are set to remain closed for the time being.

A number of other popular UK restaurant chains including Nando's have started to reopen since the government gave them the green light on 4 July.
