SquareMeal Review of Moro

Gold Award

When Sam and Samantha Clark opened Moro back in 1997 it made headlines as a pulsating Moorish innovator, and more than 20 years down the line it’s lost none of its seductive allure for a mixed crowd of Clerkenwell creatives, tourists and inquisitive diners.

A zinc-topped bar and crammed pavement tables ensure that the high-decibel show keeps rocking, although nothing can surpass the sheer palate-tingling excitement of Moro’s brilliant and deceptively simple fusion of earthy Spanish and North African food.

It’s all about intoxicating spicing, fine ingredients and subtly matched but forceful flavours, from pan-fried calf’s liver with caçik, currants and walnuts to mixed vegetable mezze or char-grilled turbot with spinach and a melange of braised tomato, muscatel raisins and pine nuts.

The wood-fired oven works its magic on chicken, pork belly and grey mullet (perhaps served with prawn and seaweed ‘fideous’), while the charcoal grill blasts out the likes of lamb with fattoush salad, tahini sauce and red chilli or pork belly with pistou, ‘angel hair’ potatoes and watercress. To finish, everyone drools over the luscious Malaga raisin ice cream, although the delectable yoghurt cake with pistachios and pomegranate is also worth a punt.

If you’re feeling really casual and laid-back, however, we suggest heading to the bar for plates of Syrian-style lentils, patatas bravas with allioli and other irresistible tapas hits. The back-packing wine list shows the same geographical allegiances as the menu, but also note the serious slate of sherries. In short, Moro delivers “quality and service every time” at prices that are never intimidating.

Appalled!

We went for dinner on Sunday night.  If you can't get a chef to work on a Sunday, don't open your restaurant.  We ordered 2 main courses (they had run out of the starter I would have had), the chicken and the lamb.  They both arrived within 3 minutes of ordering, and were slightly less than lukewarm.  Obviously plated ahead of time, and badly reheated.  We sent them back and they came back 5 minutes later, piping hot, and the lamb now overcooked.  Very average food which we ate because we were hungry; no pleasure there.  The meal came to £71 including a bottle of sparkling water.  I have never felt so ripped off.

Overrated and does not meet expectations, sadly.

We love the Tapas menu, served at the bar as a pre theatre meal. The food is fabulous and the waiters at the bar are excellent and always ready to give us recommendations. They have a great selection of reasonably priced wines. The tapas prices are very reasonable and we love the fried spiced chickpeas no pimentos de pardon. The total cost is really not expensive by London standards.

Mouthwatering
Having dined here before, my expectations were high and I was not disappointed. The menu is fairly short, meaning that each dish can be perfectly executed and cooked fresh. The desserts I'm sure haven't changed for 18 years, but the Yoghurt cake is so good, why change it? Exmouth Market is a gastronauts paradise, with Moro leading the way. The food isn't pretentious, it's just honest and full of flavour. Each dish has a great contrast of textures and flavours without being over complicated. The presentation is rustic but that just adds to the explosion of flavours beneath. The crab, prawn and mussel salad set the tone. Good meaty fish with a spicy, zingy background. The lamb with bulgar wheat and labneh was one of those dishes where you cut your final pieces into smaller bits just to extend the experience. Then dessert. The Yoghurt cake isn't really a cake, it doesn't even look that nice, just try it and you will love it. Try it with the rosewater and cardamom ice cream and your mouth will be singing all the way home. Three courses with a couple of glasses of wine each comes to about £55 a head which I feel is great value for money.

We have been to Moro regularly. This time was a (not busy) Saturday lunchtime. Food and drink were excellent as always but the service was ‘shared’ across tables, which meant basically no service. The waitresses were too busy chatting by the till to take our drinks order and we had to call across the restaurant to get the bill. At no point did anyone check if we were happy with anything or everything, not even when they brought the bill. The whole experience was extremely offhand. We have had much better service in the past when it has been much busier, so maybe they were training new staff or fielding the B team. It was very disappointing, particularly as we were taking someone who had never been before and was excited to be going.
